The starting point of Hannu Karjalainen´s video Towards an Architect is the true story of a French architect, Guillaume Gillet. A follower of the ideas of Le Corbusier, in the 1960s, Gillet was the designer of what was then the largest prison in Europe. His goal was to create a building where the inmates would be happy, but the reality proved to be something altogether different. Prisoners in Fleury-Mérogis served their sentences in facilities that were damp and cramped. Some former prisoners took revenge on the architect by breaking into Gillet´s office, holding a gun to his head and vandalising the office.
In Karjalainen´s video, a mediocre and failed architect receives tit for tat. The punishment consists of wall paints from a palette designed by the master architect Le Corbusier for the Swiss wallpaper manufacturer Salubra. Le Corbusier´s harmonious colours are available to this day, albeit not as wallpaper, but as paint.
